I am going to post regarding Cormier's unbelieveably powerful fictions shortly but I have to say that I am deeply suspicious of the value of comments by anyone who bases their knowledge on just one book to judge the work of a lifetime. A little resentful too.

Whether or not you like Cormier isn't the point -that books like The Chocolate War, I am the Cheese and After the First Death still touch reach today's readers is what I find remarkable about Cormier and even more that these books are so carefully crafted is so striking as to almost take my breathe away. No hope? What's hope got to do with the creation of powerful imaginative fictions? A young adult novel has to be hopeful to be successful? Poppycock.
