I don't know that it's that you're just dense (although it could be). I just think that you've only read THE CHOCOLATE WAR, and it's pretty hard to evaluate an entire body of work--nineteen books in this case--on the basis of one book.
While it may be hard to see hope in some of his darker books, others clearly suggest optimism or a hopeful ending. Certainly the following come to mind very quickly: OTHER BELLS FOR US TO RING, FRENCHTOWN SUMMER, I HAVE WORDS TO SPEND, and EIGHT PLUS ONE. Many others have amibiguous endings, and hope can be read into them.
