Ambiguity & style

One more thought on race consciousness: I felt that there was a semi-surreal quality to these novels, rooted in the expression of the narrative voice. They felt almost aqueous to me, in part due to the fluidity of the time sense, which flowed constantly between past and present and future. I don't think that an authoritative, omnipresent narrative voice would have left room for such ambiguities; I think that it is only because of LaVaughn's semi-conscious pattering which forms the narrative on which we eavesdrop that the ambiguity of race can work.

Other opinions on the implications of the writing style?
