Of course race matters! But, as so ingeniously designed by the author, the race is up to the reader to decide, making the fact of the matter a perfect expression of a reader's power over a writer's work. I saw LaVaughn as black and Jolly as white because they reminded me of people I knew, but how bold of Virginia to allow me the choice and the freedom to decide for myself without being "wrong."
