When I first read the books I needed to assign a picture of the characters for my own mind's eye. I wanted a visual of each one. But they never materialized as a definate "race". Each character ended up rather generic, except for LaVaughn's mom. The mother I always pictured as black, but each of the other characters were not as clearly defined. In the back of my mind they were a minority but which race didn't seem to matter.
