When I was reading the books, I did not really apply a particular race to any of the characters. I guess I never really thought about it. I think the fact that no particular race was identified allows the reader to make their own decisions as they read.
I think the expereiences the characters went through are not limited to any one race, but are common to any individual struggling in a lower socio?onomic environment. I believe that by not attaching a particular race to any of the characters prevents the pitfalls of stereotyping.
