I'd like to reinforce in this discussion that Madlenka's world vision is from her experiences on a NYC block. She meets these wonderful neighbors, and shares with us readers visual notes of their cultures that she observed by walking into their stores....Then her imagination dramatically opens with the turn of each page!
I'd also like to comment on the zooming into the block that Mr. Sis presents from the endpapers to the first sentence -- "In the universe, on a planet, on a continent, in a country, in a city, on a block, in a house, in a window, in the rain, a little girl named Madlenka....." This is perfect. I play this game with children all the time -- where is your window, what street does it look out on, what city is your street on, what state is your city in, what country is your state in, what planet is your country in, etc. Many children under 8 enjoy, yet struggle, with this perspective on their world, and I have found that "Madlenka" enhances conversations about our world and cultures with children and adults.
