It's time to begin this month's discussion on the books of Peter Sis. If you're not already familiar with his work, you may want to follow some of the links we have under "Sis Links" on our web page concerning his Arts Residency at UW-Madison: http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/sis.htm
You may also want to take a look at Megan Schliesman's review of his newest book "Ballerina" (Greenwillow) as the current Book of the Week:

And, of course, there's not substitute for looking at the books themselves!
The books Sis both writes and illustrates seem to fall into two categories: his complex picture books for older readers, such as
"Tibet" and "Starry Messenger" (both of which were published by Farrar and were Caldecott Honor books) and his whimsical books for younger children about imaginary play, such as "Fire Truck" and "Dinosaur"
(both published by Greenwillow). Last year's "Madlenka" (Farrar) seemed to combine the qualities of both categories, as Sis brought his more creatively complex use of the picture book plane into play in a book for younger children.
What are some of your thoughts in general about Sis's work for children?
