April is National Poetry Month! Several resources can be helpful.
1) The Children's Book Council's terrific links to the Library of Congress and other sites. This web site also contains a huge amount of book information to stir us all up about Poetry for the entire year. The focus is actually on Young People's Poetry Week beginning April 16. The Council's site can be found at http://www.CBCBooks.org/html/poetry_week.html
2) New editions of favorites, such as: Casey at the Bat written by Earnest Lawrence Thayer & illustrated by Christopher Bing (Handprint Books); The Times They Used to Be written by Lucille Clifton & illustrated by E.B. Lewis (Delacorte), and Children of Long Ago written by Lessie Jones Little & illustrated by Jan Spivey Gilchrist
(Lee & Low).
3) The CCBC web site's Link of the Month http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/ leads to the web site of the relatively new poet Kristine O'Connell George who writes charmingly for young children.
4) See the CCBC Book of the Week, checking Megan Schliesman's review of Jan Greenberg's handsome anthology of original poems inspired by works of contemporary American art http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/review.htm That link will also lead you to previous CCBC Books of the Week, some of which are poetry books.
5) In the publication CCBC Choices 2001, you'll find annotations for the following recommended books all published last year. Information about how to get a copy can be found at http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/public2.htm. Here are some of the featured books:
