APRIL 2001
Marc Simont has been illustrating picture books since 1939, and he is still going strong with the publication of his latest book, The Stray Dog (HarperCollins, 2001). This month we'll discuss The Stray Dog, along with the body of his work. He has written more than 100 books, including The 13 Clocks by James Thurber; The Philharmonic Gets Dressed by Karla Kuskin; the Nate the Great series by Marjorie Sharmat; and the 1957 Caldecott Medal winner A Tree Is Nice by Janice May Udry.
Later in April, we'll look back at some of the books of Robert Cormier, author of young adult classics such as The Chocolate War, I Am the Cheese, and After the First Death.
MAY 2001
It's been said that Peter Sis is one of the most imaginative artists of children's books today. For that reason we'll examine some of his books during May. Books we'll discuss will include Bean Boy (1984); Alphabet Soup (1987); Beach Ball (1990); Follow the Dream (1991); Kodmodo (1993); The Three Golden Keys (1994); Starry Messenger (1996); Tibet (1998); Fire Truck (1998); and Ballerina (2001). Others, too, if you wish!
On June 27, the Elvehjem Art Museum will open an exhibition of some of Peter Sis's works on paper. The exhibition "Small Worlds: Illustrations by Peter Sis" corresponds with Mr. Sis's summer residency at the University of Wisconsin - Madison as a guest of the Arts Institute. Mr. Sis will teach an academic course on Illustration during one of the summer sessions, give a public lecture, and make several other campus appearances. A brochure about the exhibition and related opportunities will be mailed to all Friends of the CCBC. Information will be provided on the CCBC web site next month.
JUNE 2001
The novel True Believer by Virginia Euwer Wolff (Atheneum / Simon & Schuster) is one of the most provocative works of fiction published this spring. We'll discuss it in June, along with its predecessor Make Lemonade (hardcover Henry Holt, pbk ed. also available).
Look for these books now, and be ready to enter into the discussion!
