Barbara Lalicki of HarperCollins has asked me to post this message:
A few days ago I was in Harriet Barton's office. The mood of a small picture across the room drew my attention and I walked over to look. It was even more evocative up close. Who was it done by? Marc Simont.
I worked with Marc Simont on NATE THE GREAT as an assistant editor. He was already a Caldecott Medalist, but yet he was so down-to?rth and concerned with the project at hand. This discussion reminds me of his graciousness, his focus on the characters, and his unerring exclusion of unnecessary detail. He understood the feelings between Nate and his dog, Fang. He knew Rosamund. To see his command of the art form and connection to children's emotions still vibrant today in THE STRAY DOG is inspiring.
