We'll begin our discussion this month by looking at the picture books illustrated by Marc Simont who has illustrated more than 100 books since 1939. In looking back over Marc Simont's considerable career, I am struck by how his books from the 1940s and 1950s (such as "The Happy Day" by Ruth Krauss and "A Tree Is Nice" by Janice May Udry), are still as fresh today as they were at the time they were published.

I am pleased to announce that we will have two special guests who can offer great insight into Mr. Simont's work: Anne Hoppe, Senior Editor at HarperCollins and Hariett Barton, Creative Director at Harper Collins who has worked with Mr. Simont for more than twenty years. Both of them will be happy to respond to any questions or comments you may have.

You can also find a recent interview with Marc Simont on the HarperCollins website at: http://www.harperchildrens.com/hch/author/author/simont/stray_dog.asp
