KAREN CUSHMAN SPEECH OPENS ARNE NIXON CENTER

 The Henry Madden Library will host opening ceremonies for the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children?s Literature on Saturday, April 28, at the University Courtyard Dining building on the campus of California State University, Fresno. Doors open at 9:00 a.m., program begins at 9:30.

 Newbery medalist Karen Cushman will discuss her award-winning books. Her first book, Catherine, Called Birdy, a 1994 Newbery Honor Award winner, is a novel told in diary format about a ram-bunctious 14-year-old girl in medieval England. Her second book, The Midwife?s Apprentice, set in the same time period, won the Newbery Medal for 1995.

The Ballad of Lucy Whipple (1996), set in the California Gold Rush town of Lucky Diggins, was a recent made-for-TV movie starring Glenn Close. Ms. Cushman?s newest book, Matilda Bone, returns to medieval England, where the teenaged heroine is apprenticed to Red Peg the Bonesetter. Ms. Cushman?s books will be available for sale and autographing following her talk.
