I have not yet read The Longitude Prize, but would be interested in the comments of members who have read it as well as Longitude by Dava Sobel, an adult book on the same subject, to see how they compare. Did any committee members read both books? I was also very interested in the discussion on the complementarity of text and pictures in non-fiction in reference to an award for writing. I thought one of last year's top non-fiction books was Asteroid Impact by Douglas Henderson (he was both author and illustrator), about the catastrophe which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Although the text was top-notch, it was his paintings and the way they expanded on the text which blew me away (no pun intended.) I wonder how the committee will continue to deal with this important issue. Would it be possible at some point in the future, to give an award jointly to author and illustrator, where appropriate?
