Thank you all for such a thought-provoking and insightful discussion of the Sibert Award winner and honor books and issues in the evaluation of nonfiction.

Let's now turn our attention to the Mildred L. Batchelder Award. This award is given by the Association for Library Services to Children of the American Library Association (ALA) to the U.S. publisher of the outstanding translated book of the year. The book must have been originally published in another country in another language and translated from its original language of publication into English by a U.S. publisher.

The Batchelder Terms and Criteria's page on the ALA web site states that the purpose of the award is "to encourage international exchange of quality children's books by recognizing United States publishers of such books in translation. The Award was established by the Association for Library Service to Children of the American Library Association in 1966 in the belief that 'interchange of children's books between countries, through translation, influences communication between the peoples of those countries...' (Mildred L.Batchelder, 1966)."

The committee is directed to pay primary attention to text of the book, evaluating it in terms of both its relation to the original work and the quality of the U.S. edition of the book in translation. (See the Bathelder Terms and Criterias page at http://www.ala.org/alsc/batchelder_terms.html for a detailed discussion of these criteria)

This year's Batchelder winner was Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic Press, for Samir and Yonatan by Daniella Carmi. It was translated from the Hebrew by Yael Lotan.

The 2001 Batchelder Award Committee gave honor recognition to publisher David R. Godine for Ultimate Game by Christian Lehmann. It was translated from theFrench by William Rodarmor.

What is your opinion on either or both of these titles? Please share your thoughts, questions and responses.
