I did read Sobel's Longitude when it came out and recently read The Longitude Prize. It compares favorably with Sobel's book, but is much more accessible for the younger reader. The historical characters, with all their eccentricities, are brought out more, as is the class prejudice which made the winning of the prize more difficult. I am so pleased that there is now a special award for non-fiction books! As a side note: I am somewhat new to the list. I've been enjoying reading the postings and look forward to all your comments. I've been on the Best Books for Young Adults (YALSA/ALA) committee these past few years, but always enjoy hearing more book discussion.
