It would not be appropriate for me to speak about other committee members, but I can say that I read both books, and reread Sobel's Longitude immediately after reading The Longitude Prize to see how they compared. I was fascinated by both books. In my notes I compared specific passages, and pointed out to myself
"Reading Sobel in parallel with Dash you can see that Dash is less fanciful, less given to metaphor, and heavier on the surrounding details, making that book more accessible to kids, but the writing in Sobel is much more graceful." As is appropriate for a book for readers with less background, Dash provides more of that background and her extensive bibliography includes more such material. The illustrations were icing on the cake.
