Let's begin our discussion of the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award winner and honor books:
Winner: Sir Walter Ralegh and the Quest for El Dorado by Marc Aronson (Clarion)
Honor Books: The Longitude Prize by Joan Dash (Frances Foster Books/Farrar, Straus and Giroux)
Blizzard! The Storm That Changed America by Jim Murphy (Scholastic Press)
My Season of Penguins: An Antarctic Journal by Sophie Webb (Houghton Mifflin)
Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss, and What I Learned by Judd Winick (Henry Holt)
That's a rich and varied list for us to consider!
According to the terms and criteria for the award listed on the ALA web site (read the complete informatino at www.ala.org/alsc/sibert_terms.html) the Sibert Award is "intended to honor the author whose work of nonfiction has made a significant contribution to the field of children's literature" and goes on to define "significant contribution" as being determined by "how well the entire work elucidates, clarifies and enlives its subject. Accuracy, documentatno and organization are of significance and illustrative material must meet the same standards of informaing the reader and illuminating the text."
