Complicating the question: Magazines and illustrations

Judy,
When you posted, and forwarded Marc's post re: authenticity, you reminded me that there is a whole 'nother complicated dimension to this question when we talk about illustrations. Picture books do not evolve in one mind, unless the author is the illustrator too. They are a joint, sometimes collaborative but often sequential progress. The same obviously goes for the stories in your magazines. And stories for the very young can be interpreted by an illustrator in many more ways than, say, a YA novel set in Korea.
And of course, you folks who work in magazines are in a somewhat more peculiar position than book publishers - you can't possibly know your all of your writers as well. And you work on a different time frame.
I know I would be interested if you would share some of your thoughts/experience with us all regarding this issue. :)
