Before we move on to February's topics: In her discussion of Joey Pigza, Jonathan's student Caitlin mentioned THE PLAYMAKER as being a better book, and I'm so glad to see someone mention what I thought would surely be a candidate for one of the big awards. Written by J.R. Cheany and set in Elizabethan times, it's an unusual historical novel with well?veloped characters readers can care about, who generate heart-pounding action. THE PLAYMAKER to me portrayed a foreign country and time with a great deal of complexity. I'm curious whether anybody else liked it as much as I did, or if they didn't, why.
