I teach seventh grade English, and I do a unit about Japanese-Internment also. I use a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books. Most of the books deal with the internment; however others tackle the issue of discrimination against Asian-Americans. The reading levels vary since I utilize literature circles in my classroom. The titles I use are:

Baseball Saved Us (picture book) Heroes (picture book) Whispered Silences The Children of Topaz Obasan The Invisible Thread Kim/Kimi Candle in the Wind Bat 6 Farewell to Manzanar Nisei Daughter No-No Boy Picture Bride The Journal of Ben Uchida (Dear America Series) Seventeen Syllables (short stories) Beyond Heart Mountain (poetry) Under the Blood Red Sun Journey to Topaz The Climate of the Country The Lost Garden The Big Aiiieeeee! (Japanese & Chinese Literature Anthology) Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story
