Winding down, announcement time, welcome messages

We're winding down the discussion of the books brought to heightened attention through the National Book Award, Newbery and Caldecott Award processes. Thank you to everyone who participated by sharing your experiences with some of the specific book and your responses to personally reading one or more of them. We realize that many in the CCBC-Net community have not yet seen or read the books so recently announced as award winners. We hope that what you've "heard" during January has encouraged you to look for some of them, or to think again about potential readers for many of these books.

I'm aware that we had two strands of discussion underway during the past month: specific comments about specific books and a secondary one of reflections on "who can/should write about particular themes or topics." Neither discussion can be resolved, nor should it. But we'll move on now. All contributors are welcome within any CCBC-Net discussion. No one is considered "only a teacher" or "only a writer" or any kind of "only" in the CCBC-Net community. You are each valued participants, whether or not you decide to share your comments with the community at large. The CCBC-Net community is a forum for civil exchanges of opinion and information. Sarcasm is not tolerated, although genuine differences of opinion make every discussion more interesting. We always appreciate hearing about the responses of young readers. You are welcome to venture your thoughts. We enjoy hearing new "voices," as well as hearing from individuals with whom we've become virtually acquainted.

Remember, please, to stay within the general scope of the announced discussion topic(s) each month. There are other listservs where you can ask your personal questions or gather information for projects or course assignments. If/when someone new pops into a CCBC-Net discussion with an out-of-scope comment or question, please respond directly to that person, not to the entire community.

Announcements are welcome during the final day of each month, and we're glad to see that some of you have already stepped forward with announcements related to children's and young adult literature for the CCBC-Net community. Here at "home base" we provide CCBC announcements each month because we know that many of you actually do take advantage of one or more of the information services described each month; and also because we want everyone else to know the context out of which the CCBC-Net discussions originate. - Ginny
