Just a quick plug for Miracle's Boys. I didn't read it until December, and it turned out to be one of my favorites of the year -- too late, though, for some of my early lists and predictions. It's a quiet, subtle, beautifully written book. Let It Shine is about famous heroes, past and present. Ty'ree, in Miracle's Boys, is more of an everyday hero, passing up college to take care of his family -- his two brothers and himself. He's not a martyr; we know he misses what could have been, but he is doing the best he can where he is. And a big part of this fine novel is about where he is; it's about family and community. Towards the end of the novel, it's a celebration of the sights and sounds and everyday-ness of the city. As Charlie says at the end, "Sometimes I feel like our life is one big work of art -- it's everything." It's an insight that comes with finding and appreciating your place in the world.
