Thank you, Denise, for describing your experience with this affecting book, which I, too, have been meaning to mention. Rockwell's vivid prose combine with visceral illustrations--in which Sojourner's eyes seem to pierce the viewer with their pain, anger, and dignity--to make this a truly powerful picture bio. The pictures engaged me so strongly--they convey both the frailty and incredible strength of this woman, both the humility and the proud determined spirit. The story and images stayed with me long after I closed the book.
