The Wanderer

There was a great deal of excitement at Lake Bluff School in Shorewood, WI, when our students learned that The Wanderer had been named a Newbery Honor Book. Just yesterday, one of our fifth-grade boys told me that he was buying his own copy because he wanted to read it over and over. We were fortunate to hear Sharon speak and read from the book in a local bookstore last Spring. The reading was open to the public, and many of our students were present. They had not had a chance to see the book before that night, but they have been reading it constantly since then. With each book, we seem to have more Sharon Creech fans. I was just as excited as the students, because it was the only one of the Newbery books that I had read and a favorite of mine. I was struck by the physical beauty of the book, with David Diaz's decorative elements and the different typography for Sophie's and Cody's narrative. The story progressed seamlessly, with subtle differences as the narrator's voice changed. Thank you, Ginny, for reminding us to comment on the other books. Since this was published earlier in the year, I was looking at other people's comments about the newer books and didn't think to comment about The Wanderer.
