Along with A YEAR DOWN YONDER, THE WANDERER was an especial favorite of mine among the Newbery books. I only had a handful of fifth grade students who read it, and they unanimously loved it. In fact, their strong favorable reactions forced me to rethink its award possibilities. Although, it didn't fare as well in our mock Newbery because only a few had read it, and none of them were passionate in their defense (they were all quiet types), but it still made our final ballot.

When I read THE WANDERER I thought of it as an adventure book. I learned a lot like the first two letters of Sophie is S and O so the first two words of her name in a special dialogue is Sierra-Oscar. I love THE WANDERER. It is a good book. I know it probably won't win but out of the books I have read it's a winner to me. It was interesting like how Cody taught how to juggle or the stories about Bompie that Sophie told. Like at the end of each story Bompie always got a pie. I'm sure if Sophie were real she would thank her Uncle Dock Uncle Stew, and Uncle Mo for taking her to see her grandfather, Bompie. In other words, I like THE WANDERER. I could not put the book down. It was too good. I hope it wins the Medal.

THE WANDERER, as you could guess, was in my favorite circle of books. The plot was so interesting, and I had never read any book like it before. None with the same plot. None with the same style and theme. None with such a distinguished setting. When I read it, I felt like I was with the whole crew on the crashing waves. As the story continued on, I thought *I* would drown and die from the white wave. I could feel the hurting, I could feel all the people felt inside whether it was a joyful moment or a time when an argument was going on. The book was so exciting, with more action and dialogue. Reading the book was like a voyage itself.

My reaction to this book is huge! I think this book is great! I really like it when there were two people telling the story. I also could easily tell that Sophie's parents died in a huge storm. You would probably think that I liked Sophie as the best character but my favorite character is Cody.
If I rated this book between one and ten with one as the worst and ten as the best, this book would be one of my favorite books. It would at least be a nine and a half! I think this book is great. Maybe it could be a Newbery Medal book this year.
