Thanks to everyone who participated in the December discussion of Favorites of the Year! This is usually a very lively CCBC-Net month, in that many of you find a way to "step up to the mike" and tell everyone else about a book or books you particularly enjoyed during the year. This year was no exception. In mentioning the names of individuals who did this, I'm indicating that your message(s) was/were, indeed, received. I've probably overlooked some names midst the busy-ness and business of the CCBC-Net month. If so, I apologize. Meanwhile, special thanks since December 12 (in my time zone) to Edie, Christine, Andrew, Lyn, JoAnn, Elizabeth Elizabeth P., Elizabeth B., Kathleen, Cassie, John, Susan, Lisa, Mary, Carla, Henrietta, Sharon L., Doris, Kathy, Dean, Lauri, Elizabeth T., Elizabeth D., Sheila, Gregory, Joyce, Sharon G., Megan, Jonathan, Maia, Laurie, Rob, Monica and Linda. Wow! It looks as if the Elizabeths of the CCBC-Net community came forward in a big way!
Now it's time for me to say - once again - that there's no such person as a "lurker" in the CCBC-Net community. You are all active participants. Why? Well, you're signed up; you print out an occasional message for your paper files or other uses; you talk about what someone recently wrote with a co-worker or someone at home; you look for a book you've found out about or been reminded of on CCBC-Net & you actually read it to a child/children, or to yourself - or later you teach it, or you write about it. Your active participation in CCBC-Net takes many other forms, as well. However, it's the people who offer their comments to the community at large who make CCBC-Net happen. At the beginning of a new millenium (?) and year, and at the end of the Favorites Discussion, I want to acknowledge everyone who has contributed directly to any of the CCBC-Net discussions during the past year. Regardless of whether or not everyone else agrees with you
- and not everyone will, I assure you, no matter what you write or who you are or where you live - I'm certain that everyone in the CCBC-Net community joins me in appreciating your willingness to share your thinking at the moment with others in the our electronic community. You are the ones who make CCBC-Net work. We thank you!
But we also want to thank everyone who continues to be part of CCBC-Net at any level. Thank you for your understanding of everyone's typos, thank you for your patience when we push the keyboard or emotional button too hastily, and thank you for your "backstage" messages and suggestions to Megan, Katy and/or me.
One reminder: if you wish, you may sign up for the digest format of CCBC-Net and receive only one message a day on days when one or more messages are sent to the CCBC-Net community. If you do, send a message to Chris Dowling cdowling at ccbc.education.wisc.edu indicating that you want to change your current CCBC-Net format to the digest. Don't expect instant adjustment. Like most of you, Chris, too, has some leeway during this month in his schedule. But he'll always answer your questions and help you in whatever way you need when you need him.
And now - let's talk about the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. See the next message for details...
