I liked Hurry Freedom, African Americans in the Goldrush. Jerry Stanley tells the story of African Americans in California before the Civil War by focusing on Mifflin Gibbs, who arrived in San Francisco in 1850. Gibbs prospered as a businessman but was less successful in his battles to win civil rights for blacks, especially the right to testify. In 1858 he and other African Americans chose to leave California for Victoria, British Columbia. He eventually returned to the U.S., earned a law degree, and became ambassador to Madagascar.

I liked learning about Gibbs and also thought Stanley did a good job of presenting some complex issues, like the right to testify, without losing the thread of his story. It's a nicely designed book, too.
