I just wanted to chime in, as an aside, on one aspect of this discussion that I find particularly exciting. Many folks have been mentioning this book and short stories, and they've used that as a PLUS. Also, throughout the entire teen discussion at BBYA, there must have been a dozen kids who said how much they love short stories. Having been inside publishing and seen how publishers, sales directors and marketing people cringed every time a short story collection was brought for acquisition consideration, I'd like it noted that kids seem to want them, if they're good! I love the short story as an art form, and I think there are marvelous writers out there able to use it beautifully, but I worry that not enough of them make it into print. Hopefully, publishers will take note of this development and put more effort into finding great short story writers and publishing them well!
