I just came home from the Bank Street Bookstore (which gets far too much of my hard earned cash) with Casey at the Bat which I think is remarkably clever. I am sure that my 4th graders are going to love it too. They adore books that play with form like this --- diaries, letters, etc. The fake primary sources idea is wonderful and beautifully executed. Next month I will start a unit on Pilgrims in which the children, after much research, create composite Mayflower passengers and works of historical fiction. More and more every year they enjoy playing with the final form of these creations. This book provides a new angle for them to consider in addition to the already popular journals, diaries, and letters.
