The most moving book to me of the Newbery list was "Joey Pigza Loses Control." Jack Gantos succeeded so beautifully at getting inside his character's head and showing us the world from his point of view. There was not one waver in "voice." I finished it, thinking: "Every adult who comes in contact with kids should read this book." There's a book that's truly for adults as well as children, for the insight gained!!
A note on Richard Peck: my son wrote to him as part of a school assignment, before the publication of "Down Yonder." He wrote a lovely long letter back, talking about this future award-winning book and the motivation for writing it. What a great guy! My son will treaure that letter forever.
