The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and Information Studies announces its biennial children's literature conference to be held at The Pyle Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus on Thursday and Friday, April 5-6, 2001.
(Note: Although this conference, in years past, has been on Friday and Saturday, we are changing the dates for this year to accommodate Passover.)
The conference, The Call of Stories: The Allure of Narrative for Children and Young Adults, will examine the similarities and differences between written and oral narration, authenticity of narration, the links between visual and verbal narratives, what is left unspoken with the choice of a narrator, and the advantages a story has by virtue of its narrator.
Featured speakers include storyteller and author Alice McGill; writer Kimberly Willis Holt; folklorist, librarian and author Betsy Hearne; folklorist, librarian, author and storyteller Margaret Read MacDonald; illustrator S.D. Nelson; actor, playwright and author Jim DeVita; and illustrator and art director Christy Hale.
There will be opportunities to discuss books in small groups (preschool to grade 2, grades 3-6 and young adult). There will be Interest Groups on numerous topics including: Using Song in Story Hour; Visions and Voices of Our Elders - A Writing Project Using College Students to Mentor Youth; Middle School Students as Storytellers in the Library; The Charlotte Zolotow Award; Young Adult Picture Books; Audience Participation Folktales, Why We Love Harry Potter, and more.
The conference fee is $229 with a student fee of $39, space permitting.
