My 10-year-old son Sam and I finished The Amber Spyglass last night (Jan.1st). I felt it was the best book I read last year even though we technically finished it the first day of 2001. A great conclusion to the trilogy! Every time I had a question about plot, Pullman answered it within a few pages. I had been waiting two years for this book to arrive and it didn't disappoint. I'm sure it'll be controversial in the next few years when certain groups discover Pullman's anti-Christianity sections.
While reading this book aloud to Sam (who has already had Tolkien, every Redwall, and every Harry Potter read to him), I was thinking that this was definitely more adult than the other two books in the series - until we finished the book and Sam said (first) "I hope he writes another one in the series" and (second) "We need to read them all again and see what we missed the first time."
