I was surprised to see Book of the Lion on the NBA short list. I read it earlier in the year and would not have called it distinguished. Unlike Claudia, I didn't get that caught up in the adventure or the characters. I felt it trudged along on the way to the Crusades and then not that much happened once they reached their goal; the pacing seemed off. I don't object to the violence, and the grim view of the past and the brutality of most of the men seemed plausible and appeared to be well researched. I would certainly recommend to a reader interested in knights, the Crusades, etc, but it didn't stand out among the year's books for me.
