Silent to the Bone

Well, hey, you knew it was only a matter of time until I jumped into this one, right? But I'll be civil and restrained, I promise. ;-)

Our mock Newbery named SILENT TO THE BONE as our winner too, and we had eleven fifth graders participating. Obviously, they found it to be extremely age-appropriate, and there was barely any discussion on this point. I can only concur with Kathleen that the committee must have found a serious literary flaw in order to not recognize it.

I just loved SILENT TO THE BONE!! I like it for a number of reasons: (1) It seems so real cause I have a little brother who is always getting hurt, (2) I just can't put the book down cause you're thinking what might happen but instead the least thing you would think happens, (3) The thing with Branwell not speaking for so long over Nikki is a great angle for the book. I think this book should be a mock Newbery cause it shows you what to do in real life stuff. I usually don't tell anyone, and I mean anyone, what I really think about any book, but this one touched me. Enjoy!!

I think SILENT TO THE BONE was an extremely good book. It is definitely one of the best books this year. E.L. Konigsburg really expresses the characters, like right when you think you know everything about the character, she tells you more. It's a very hard subject to write about and she does a very, very good job. It's like a cliffhanger that never ends until the last few pages. It is so suspenseful.
Did Branwell do it? If not, who did? Did he really drop her or was she already breathing funny? Then at the end it all makes sense, and it just jumps out at you and you get it. I thought it was going to be boring because of the title and the name, but it just keeps getting better and better. I really liked this book.

My reaction to the book, SILENT TO THE BONE, is that it was a great book. I love the way the author, E.L. Konigsburg gives little clues in the book and at the end the book turned out great. I love the surprise ending and how you would never expect Branwell to speak and talk again. The way everything happens and falls into place, it's just fantastic. The way Connor has a special way of communicating with Branwell is very creative, the way the author thinks of it. I like the author's style of writing, and I like a lot of dialogue in books because it grabs more of my attention to keep reading and reading. That's why I couldn't put the book down. I just kept reading and reading. It didn't take me very long to read it because it was so good.
I love this book and this would go in my top five books this year that I read and number one for the Newbery books I read this year. So my final reaction is: this is a great book and I would encourage more and more people to read this wonderful book.

I thought SILENT TO THE BONE was in my small selection of Newbery books. The theme stood out from the crowd of other Newbery books, with an interesting plot. One part I especially liked was the game SIAS (summarize in a sentence). It was an odd but mysterious book, but it was definitely hard to put down. Every chapter was different in its own way, and I never knew what was to happen next. What was the next thing Branwell would tell Connor in the cards? Would Branwell's baby half-sister survive from a coma? These were questions that were not completely answered, but that made the story more interesting.
SILENT TO THE BONE was very distinguished from all the other 13 Newbery books I had read.
