It is extremely rare in my experience reading novels that the word choice, sentence structure, reading pace and characters all mesh together to give a complete feel of the story. Both Joey books accomplished this at a brilliant level which exemplifies my insistence that some of the best writing is found in children's books.

As for the interesting discussion questioning if the Joey character fairly captures the signs and symptoms of ADHD, I have two comments. First, ADHD is never explicitly mentioned and two, every case is different. Regardless of whether Jack Gantos wrote "accurately", he created a character who I feel is intriguing, loving and extremely real to me.

I'm only disappointed that the Joey books haven't been received to the level I've felt they should -- aka, only a National Book Award honor and Newbery Honor.
