I read many terrific books in 2000, so I'm not prepared to say which was the best. However, there is no doubt that The Amber Spyglass provided me with the most emotional, most stimulating, and most engrossing reading experience of all. It may have been because I had been waiting for it with excitement and trepidation (fearful that it would not be a fitting conclusion to the trilogy). It may have been because I had to read it over a weekend in order to return it to someone who lent me his advance copy. But I think it was because of the incredible imagery, prose, characters, and plot lines. It made me think. It made me want to spend my summer at a NEH seminar reading Milton. It had me going back and rereading parts over and over. And it certainly made me cry. An incredible experience!
