We just finished reading JP in our 6th grade class. The kids loved it and really paid attention!
We have a student in this class who is diagnosed with ADHD. We all discussed disabilities at one point..I told them about my son having had epilepsey...to try and clarify what is a disability. When we met again and I asked them for a summary so far, someone blurted out the words "mentally retarded." I almost screamed...so...I invited our Special Ed. teacher to address the class and discuss disabilities like ADD, ADHD and others. It was great. They kids had tons of questions...and she answered them beautifully. I also sent a note home to parents telling them that we were doing this and why.
To finish it off...I promised the class I would bake them sho-fly pies to celebrate since no one had ever heard of it. They are really excited...wait until they taste it!
