I have to disagree with Rob's assessment of the "Newbery-type book -fiction for older readers that deals with heavy emotions. You know what I mean?" I thought this year's Newbery selections were excellent. All of them. Joey Pigza was my favorite, but A Year Down Yonder is a worthy choice, too. The book on tape is excellent, too.

Of course the books deal with some hard, real-life themes, but I think all five of the Newbery books are written with humanity, humor, and insight. I'm not sure how any of these books would qualify as a book overloaded with heavy emotion. In A Year Down Yonder, there's poignancy and a whole lot of humor, as there is in Joey Pigza. Who can write about a serious subject with as much compassion and humor than Jack Gantos? I love Hope Was Here, too. Yes, there's cancer and loss, but there are good fun and high spirits too, and the life of a good diner. I love the line: Addie never promised that life would be easy, but she did promise that if I hung with her the food would be good." Speaking of food, I have to go to lunch. More later.
