Titus had severed hands

To further this (gruesome) subject, let us not forget Shakespeare. Titus's daughter lost her hands (and tongue), so she cannot point (or tell) who her assailants were.

Linda & all - While we're on this grisly topic, don't forget the marvelous folktales revolving around the "hand of glory" (a severed hand from a hanged criminal - believed to exert a spell that would aid robbers). In the British variants it's usually a woman or girl that saves the day and alerts the house/inn about the robbery. - Denise

Although I have not been following this thread at each twist and turn, I seem to recall that most of the postings have been about men and boys. I find it interesting that the Grimm brothers tell a story about a girl whose hands have been cut off by her father. There are similar stories in other cultures (an African one comes to mind) about girls who have had their hands severed by their fathers, none literary tales, all folklore.
