Maryann Owen asked: Is there anyone out there who read only A YEAR DOWN YONDER? If so, it would be interesting to hear from someone who read it without comparing it to the first book.
I have read both books but my sixth graders have not. I was nearly through reading A YEAR DOWN YONDER to them when the awards were announced. (You can imagine my pleasure.) Today they heard about the artist and the snake and laughed and laughed, just as I did. It's fresh and wonderful to them and not a one has read or even heard of the previous volume. They love Grandma Dowdel and they're rooting for her every scheme. They did want to know if they were ever going to be assigned to READ a book that was as good as this one and WYNN-DIXIE. And one of them assured his classmates that MANIAC MAGEE would be.
