Can't resist jumping into the fray. Writing out of one's own culture is a tricky and loaded subject. As a writer, I do it, and stand on my right to. If I only wrote from my own culture I'd be confined to bohemian, Depression-scarred, left-wing starving artists. Kinda narrow. Several years ago I asked Ursula LeGuin about this issue, and she replied;
"I believe it is now time for people to tell their own stories. I also believe that any writer has a right to write about whatever she wants." "But Ursula," I replied, "those are contradictory." She smiled. "One of the nice things about getting older," she said, "is that I can hold two contradictory feelings."
