USBBY (The United States Board on Books for Youth) invites everyone to meet and hear Sarah Ellis, the featured speaker at an open meeting on Friday, January 12, 8:00 p.m., during ALA's midwinter conference in Washington D.C. The location is the Washington Convention Center, 900 9th St. NW (Rooms 13, 14, and 15).
The title of Sarah's speech is "Writers as Children, Children as Writers." Book sales and autographing will be available during the reception following Sarah's speech. The reception will be hosted by two of her publishers: Simon & Schuster and Fitzhenry & Whiteside.
This special event is open to everyone in the Washington D.C. area who is interested. No charge. Tell your friends. Bring them along. Forward this open invitation to others.
Registration for the ALA conference is NOT necessary. Membership in ALA or in USBBY is NOT necessary. But it is necessary to plan your dinner/travel times on Friday, Jan. 12, so you won't miss this splendid opportunity to hear one of the outstanding speech writers/presenters within the children's literature community of North America. Some of us have heard Sarah speak during one or more of the annual summer institutes hosted by Children's Literature New England. She's articulate and she's witty - and she has something important to say!
But don't take my word for all that (that's Ginny talking). Listen to Sarah yourself by visiting the web cast speech Sarah gave at the USBBY conference held on the UW-Madison campus in October, 1999 http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/webcast.htm#points Then plan to hear her in person.
Sarah Ellis lives in Vancouver, B.C. Her children's books published in the U.S.A. include "Pick Up Sticks," "Out of the Blue," Next-Door Neighbors," "Back of Beyond: Stories," and "Family Project" (All: McElderry Books / Simon & Schuster). "Family Project" is published as
"The Baby Project" (Groundwood) in Canada. A picture book "Next Stop" has just been published (Fitzhugh & Whiteside). Her two recent books about writing are "The Young Writer's Companion" (Groundwood, 1999) and "From Reader to Writer: Teaching Writing through Classic Children's Books" (Groundwood, 2000). Sarah is a regular contributor to "The Horn Book," "Quill and Quire," and "The Looking Glass." She has taught children's literature at universities across Canada and in the United States, Europe and Japan.
Questions? Contact Virginia Golodetz (ALA representative on the USBBY Board) agolod at together.net
It'll be a grand time to meet others in the CCBC-Net community, as well. I'll see you there!
