I was very happy to see "Because of Winn-Dixie" receive a Newbery Honor. I loved this book, and so did my nine-year-old daughter. It is such a well-written story with appealing characters and genuine emotion. The end brought tears to my eyes.
And I would really love to taste one of those candied lozenges that Opal describes.
I just have to wonder if the committee couldn't bring itself to give Kate DiCamillo the big prize because she's just a first-time author.
I haven't read "A Year Down Yonder" yet, but I did enjoy "A Long Way
From Chicago," and I am eager to see the sequel.
I also enjoyed "Joey Pigza Loses Control" and thought it was one of the few sequels I've read that's even better than the original. I hope Jack Gantos has another Joey story in the works.
