I strongly disagree. I thought Book of the Lion was brilliant. I've read a lot of fiction set in medieval times, and I thought this was among the most vivid in atmosphere and setting. I felt as if I was there along all of Edmund's journey. The battle scenes and the depictions of English town life were particulalry enthralling. I have not read fiction as good about these times since Rosemary Sutcliff.
This book was a very worthy NBA nominee. Sorry it did not win.

I was surprised to see Book of the Lion on the NBA short list. I read it earlier in the year and would not have called it distinguished. Unlike Claudia, I didn't get that caught up in the adventure or the characters. I felt it trudged along on the way to the Crusades and then not that much happened once they reached their goal; the pacing seemed off. I don't object to the violence, and the grim view of the past and the brutality of most of the men seemed plausible and appeared to be well researched. I would certainly recommend to a reader interested in knights, the Crusades, etc, but it didn't stand out among the year's books for me.
