I must agree with Megan's assessment of A YEAR DOWN YONDER. I was also somewhat disappointed in the sequel to the wonderful A LONG WAY FROM CHICAGO. The second book feels a bit watered down. For me, Peck's first book had it all and I felt it should have been the Newbery Award winner instead of the Honor Book. The characters were fresh and quirky and Grandma Dowdel with her methods for getting what she wanted were intriguing and hilarious. There were also poignant moments where I got a lump in my throat. In other words, it made me feel for the characters and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The sequel just didn't do that for me.
Is there anyone out there who read only A YEAR DOWN YONDER? If so, it would be interesting to hear from someone who read it without comparing it to the first book.
