Every year I send a favorite picture book to my dear Aunt Jean and her children and grandchildren. They read it together on Christmas Day. This year I sent The Grannyman by Judith Byron Schachner. In this story, the love for a pet and the careful observation of the effects of aging are so warmly developed that listeners tend to feel the love felt for themselves by their dear ones. I've read it aloud to first graders and they have all been thoroughly charmed.
