The original post didn't mention the field of books under consideration for the CCBC mock Newbery. They are: SILENT TO THE BONE by E.L. Konigsburg, JOEY PIGZA LOSES CONTROL by Jack Gantos, SKULLDUGGERY by Kathleen Karr, ESPERANZA RISING by Pam Munoz Ryan, FEVER 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, GATHERING BLUE by Lois Lowry, and MATILDA BONE by Karen Cushman.
I was very happy to see SILENT TO THE BONE win, and it's one of my two favorites for the Newbery. The other one is ESPERANZA RISING by Pam Munoz Ryan, and I was disappointed that it wasn't recognized. I like JOEY PIGZA as an Honor book, as well as MEMORIES OF SUMMER by Ruth White and A YEAR DOWN YONDER by Richard Peck. Other books that I think could make it into the Newbery line-up: BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE by Kate DiCamillo, THE WANDERER by Sharon Creech, and THE QUEEN OF ATTOLIA by Megan Whalen Turner (perhaps more of a Printz book).
I am doing a mock Newbery with my fifth grade class this year (thanks to a grant from the Northern California Children's Booksellers Association). We have been reading thirty five different titles since the beginning of the school year, and students have to read ten to participate. We won't discuss and vote until early January, so it's hard to get a handle on things at this point, but some favorites include ESPERANZA RISING, JOEY PIGZA, BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, and IT'S RAINING PIGS AND NOODLES by Jack Prelutsky.
