I just saw a new Math Starts book on the review shelf on symmetry, but it sounds quite different from what you are thinking of. It is by Stuart J. Murphy and has a kite on the cover. (HarperCollins)
Symmetry is in the curriculum under math, but probably comes up in science, too. It is not something that I have been looking for, since literacy is my main focus, but any attractive book that kids might like can support literacy. Kids and all of us love photos!
