USBBY (the United States Board on Books for Youth) invites everyone to a meeting on Friday, January 12, 8:00 p.m. during ALA's midwinter session in Washington D.C. to hear an address by Sarah Ellis, one of Canada's premier, award-winning authors.
This event will take place in the Washington Convention Center, 900 9th St. NW (Rooms 13, 14, & 15).
The title of Sarah's speech is "Writers as Children, Children as Writers." Book sales and autographing will be available during the reception following Sarah's speech. The reception will be hosted by two of her publishers: Simon & Schuster and Fitzhenry & Whiteside.
This special event is open to anyone in the Washington D.C. area who is interested. No charge. Tell your friends. Just show up. Registration for the ALA conference is NOT necessary. Membership in ALA or in USBBY is NOT necessary. Plan your dinner/travel times on Friday, Jan. 12, so you can arrive in time.
Sarah's children's books published in the U.S.A. include "Pick Up Sticks," "Out of the Blue," Next-Door Neighbors," "Back of Beyond: Stories," and "Family Project" (All: McElderry Books / Simon & Schuster). "Family Project" is published as "The Baby Project"
(Groundwood) in Canada. A picture book "Next Stop" has just been published (Fitzhugh & Whiteside). Her two recent books about writing are "The Young Writer's Companion" (Groundwood, 1999) and "From Reader to Writer: Teaching Writing through Classic Children's Books"
(Groundwood, 2000). Sarah is a regular contributor to "The Horn Book,"
"Quill and Quire," and "The Looking Glass." She has taught children's literature at universities across Canada and in the United States, Europe and Japan.
Sarah is one of the finest speakers in the North American children's literature community. (That's me, Ginny Kruse, talking!) Some of us have heard Sarah speak during one or more institutes hosted by Children's Literature New England. She's articulate and she's witty and she has something important to say! But don't take my word for this. Listen to Sarah yourself by visiting the web cast speech Sarah gave at the USBBY conference held on the UW-Madison campus in October, 1999 http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/webcast.htm#points
Meet and hear Sarah Ellis in person. And tell others...
